Skanda Myth -- A Blow to Matriarchal Society
Synopsis of forthcoming paper by Prof. S. Krishnarajah of the University of
Jaffna, Sri Lanka
Different versions regarding the myth of Skanda are founr in different
Puranas and epics. Similar to any other myth, Skanda's myth also contains
cherished memories of primitive peoples. The proposed study is an attempt
to interpret the Skanda myth as found in the Mahabharata as a symbolic
representation of a contest between matriarchal society and the victorious
patriarchal society.
The thesis of this paper is centered around the principles of patriarcal
and matriarchal system and assume devas and asuras as representatives of
these systems respectively. The methodology of this paper is provided by
J.J. Bachofen, Freud, Jung and Erich Fromm.
